I was absent, and missed orientation. Could you please tell me about the school rules?

Explaining the contents of the orientation takes a huge amount of time, so we ask that you first thoroughly read the school guidebook for the Japanese Language School Affiliated with Tokyo International University school guide book (a Japanese version, Chinese version, Korean version, and English version is available). The guide book contains most general topics about our school’s rules, however if you have any questions regarding anything, please don’t hesitate to ask us here in the office.

I have some things that I would like to submit to the office. Till what time is the office open?

As a general rule, our office hours are from 9:00 ~ 17:00. Other than an emergency, we are not available outside of service hours. Also, our office is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, the day of the anniversary of the founding of our school, and at the very end and beginning of the year.

In order to take an examination, I need to provide specific certifications and verification forms ( such as school attendance rate, grade reports, etc.). What exactly should I do?

You can apply for, and receive any necessary certification or verification form here at the main office. Please note that from the time you submit the application, it takes some time to process and actually receive your forms (from about two days to one week). To avoid any issues, please take care of these matters far enough in advance. Also,  please first meet and discuss with your homeroom teacher prior to applying for any certification/verification forms.

I lost my student ID, and I cannot find it anywhere...

You must always carry your student ID. In the case that you lost your student ID, please inform the office immediately. Once you informed the office, we will distribute to you a new student ID car two days later. Please be aware that you will be required to pay a small fee for any ID redistribution.

I would like to make a plane ticket reservation to return home for the summer. Would you mind telling me the summer schedule?

Please double-check the annual school schedule.

I want to take an EJU preparatory course. What should I do?

Preparation for the EUJ requires that students take subjects relating to physics, chemistry, biology, science related math, humanities related math, and Japan and the world. Also, for the sake of university entrance examination preparation, we offer test taking English courses, TOEFL preparatory courses, and graduate school entrance examination preparatory courses. Students enrolled in either the Advanced Academic Course or the University Preparatory Course, are able to take any preparatory courses they wish to participate in. Those who wish to take preparatory courses, please apply at the main office. Please confirm preparatory class dates and time will posted on the information boards in front of the main office.

I am not satisfied with the Japanese language class in which I was placed after the placement examination. Is it possible to change my class?

Generally, students are not allowed to change their class level. Classes are constructed by the four basic skills: reading; writing; listening; and speaking, and the level in which you are placed is determined and decided by your overall general score and performance on the placement examination. So that students can improve their overall Japanese language skills, we place everyone in the most appropriate level classes that balance the four main language skills. However, if you are still not satisfied and convinced by the level in which you were placed, please speak with your homeroom teacher, and we will meet and discuss with you individually.

I have a slight problem, and I am wondering if there is anyone at school that I can talk to...

Of course, we are here to discuss with you about your schooling and study, issues throughout your daily life, and any other issues unrelated to living in Japan and studying. If you have something you would like to discuss, please feel free to speak to your homeroom teacher, or anyone of us in the office.

I have a slight problem, but I am not able to clearly express myself in Japanese yet...

There is no need to worry. At our school, we have staff members who are always available that can speak English, Chinese, and Korean, and depending on the day, we have staff members in the office who speak additional languages. Without hesitation, please come and see us at the main office.

I already have the same necessary text books. Do I still have to purchase additional text books at the time books are being sold?

For those students who already hold the necessary text books, it is not required that you purchase the same text books again. Required text books are sold in sets for each class. However, if there is a book or two that you do not need, please inform us at the time of purchase.

Do I only need to buy text books at the beginning of each semester?

When teachers feel that new text books would benefit the progression of class, there may be times when you will be required to buy new study material and text books. Also, since we organize and change classes year-round, there are occasions where students are switched to different class levels. In this situation, sometimes there are not enough books to supplement each student, thus we may ask students to purchase the necessary text books for the sake of class progression.

I would like to purchase text books about subjects from other classes and study independently on my own time. Would you allow me to buy such text books?

Of course, you can buy any book you want, and study as you wish.

Rather purchasing from the school, is it OK if I  purchase text books from a book store?

We don’t mind at all, but we sell our text books at discounted prices. It’s technically cheaper buying the necessary text books through our school.

I am not feeling well, and would like to stay home and rest. What should I do?

It is your responsibility to take care of your physical condition, but if your condition is rather severe, we ask that you don’t push yourself too hard. In the situation that you decide to take break from school, please contact your homeroom teacher and inform them of your current situation before class begins. Also, please go visit the doctor’s office as soon as you can.

I caught a cold and missed class...

Not only when you are sick, but anytime you miss class, within one week from being absent, you are required to fill out and submit an absent form and one of the following documents to your homeroom teacher
    1) Being sick/catching a cold – medical receipt, medicine bag, health inspection form, etc.
    2) Taking a test – test verification slip, test guideline book, etc.
    3) Other reasons – verification from the embassy, city hall, ward office, immigration office, police department, etc.

The train was late, and as a result, I was late to class...

Anytime you are late to, or leaving early from class, you must inform your homeroom teacher in advance. In the situation that your train was late, you are required to receive a late slip from the train station, and present it to your homeroom teacher.

I heard that this school is very strict with lateness and absences. Is that so?

As part of the rules for international students decided by the immigration, good attendance rate at any Japanese language facility is strictly required and enforced. Also, since the progress and improvement of your Japanese language level is proportional to the amount of appropriate class and guidance time, it is extremely important that you maintain good attendance and attend class every day. From the time you enroll into school, till you graduate, our school gathers the sum of classes attended, and classes missed for each student, and any student who is considered as having poor attendance is subject to expulsion from school.

I have a severe illness, and I was told by my doctor to temporarily stop attending school until my condition improves. What should I do?

If it seems that a great amount of time will be necessary till your conditions improves, we ask that you return to your home country, and devote yourself to your medical treatment.

How will know my Japanese skills are improving?

Here at our school, we hold three annual levels tests (in July, December, and March). Also, we hold a school-wide test in September. In addition, students will take daily quizzes at the end of each section from their main text books. Through the variety of tests and quizzes that students are made to take, it is very easy to gage how much one’s Japanese skills are improving. As an objective level indicator, students may also take the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) and/or the EJU (The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students). Here at school, we will also hold mock-tests (preparation tests) for the JLPT and EJU.

I have a questions relating to class. Can I discuss this with someone outside of class time?

Anytime you have something you don’t understand, feel free to visit and ask the teachers after class.

How does TIUJ recognized and acknowledge the graduation of a student?

Students who have fulfilled the following criteria will be acknowledged as a student that graduated from TIUJ
    1) Being present and enrolled at our school throughout the entire set period of study

               2) Obtaining grades greater than or equal to that of the passing level.

               3) Having an attendance rate with a sum greater than or equal to 80%

          4) Submitting the required graduation essay by the designated date and time

          5) Taking the graduation examination, and receiving a score greater than or equal to that of the standard score limit

Can I live in a school dormitory? If so, when can I begin living there?

If you are a student enrolled in our school, and if you wish to live in a school dormitory, then it is possible. You are allowed to live in the dorms for as long as you are enrolled here at TIUJ (either a year, or a year and a half’s worth of time). Upon finishing your studying program, you will be asked to leave the dormitory by the 24th of the month in which you graduated. Students are allowed to begin living in the dorms in increments of six months starting from April till September, or October till March. If you wish to renew your contract,  make sure you take care of any renewal contracting here at the front office one month before the current contract ends.

Can I buy and use a school commuter train pass?

Yes, you can. When buying a school commuter pass, it is required that you present your student ID card. Your student commuter train pass allows for unlimited train usage (one month, three months, or six months on end) only between the interval of stations (your nearest local train station, and Takadanobaba) as listed on your student ID.

I heard from one of the upper classmen that when traveling in Japan, students can receive discounted long distance train fares. If it's possible, could I receive a student discount verification slip?

We can print out and distribute to you a student discount verification slip here at the front office. Simply by presenting a student discount verification slip; you can receive a 20% discount off any JR long distance train fares, so please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Is it mandatory that I receive a health inspection?

All students a required to receive a health inspection on the designated day. Also, our school covers the health inspection fee.

When I attempt to use the computer in the computer lab, I am asked for a long-in ID and password, and cannot log in...

If you are a student enrolled in our school, then anyone can use the computers in the computer lab for free. However, you need to come and receive your proper log-in information from the front office. In the case that you have forgotten your user ID and/or password, you will need to reapply for new log-in information. After applying, it will take approximately one week till we can redistribute your information to you.

Can I print out documents in the computer lab?

There are color printers available for you to use. However, we ask that you use them conservatively and avoid wasting supplies such as paper and ink.

I bought a cellphone. Is it OK if I use it at school?

We do not allow the usage of cellphones in class here at our school. While in class, we ask that you completely turn off your phone, or turn it to silent mode throughout the remainder of the lecture. If you want to use your phone on your break, please do so in the halls or lobby.

I want to connect my cellphone to the school's Wi-Fi. What should I do?

Students are able to connect to the school’s Wi-Fi from within the school building. A password is required in order to use our school’s internet, so please come speak with us at the front office.

The bento  that I bought at the convenient store this morning is cold and isn't that delicious...

There are microwaves available on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building. Feel free to use them on your lunch break.

I would like to make a copy of something. Where can I make copies at school?

There is a copy machine available on the 3rd floor. Also, the copy machine at school is cheaper than using a copy machine at a convenience store, so please us it as you wish.

I have something that I would like to FAX. Can I send documents via FAX from school?

However, if you are sending a FAX to somebody within Japan, please use a convenient store FAX machine (you can send FAXs national cheaper at a convenient store). Such activities consists of sado (art of Japanese tea), kado (Japanese flower arrangement), shodo (Japanese calligraphy), shogi (Japanese chess), and kitsuke (Japanese kimono wearing). Students enrolled in our school may feel free to participate in these activities whenever they want. I would like to participate in a homestay program and experience the life style of Japanese people over the summer. Is that possible?
