On June 26th, as part of our extracurricular learning program, our students attended a special Noh performance held at the National Noh Theatre in Tokyo.
For many students, it was their first time stepping into a Noh theatre, and they were deeply impressed by the solemn and serene atmosphere that surrounded them. It was a valuable opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most traditional performing arts.
Two pieces were performed: the comical Kyogen play "Busu", which brought laughter to the audience, and the intense Noh play "Kanawa", which explored themes of resentment and obsession. Through not only the dialogue but also the performers’ movements, facial expressions, elaborate costumes, and the music of flutes and drums (hayashi), students were able to appreciate the depth and richness of Japanese culture through both sight and sound.
Although some were puzzled by the classical Japanese language and unique phrasing used in the utai chanting, students watched the stage with serious expressions, clearly captivated by the unique world that unfolded through these contrasting forms of performing art.
By experiencing this authentic expression of Japanese culture—something that cannot be conveyed through regular classroom learning—we believe the students were able to deepen their understanding of the traditions and history that lie behind the Japanese language.
